Senior Home Care – Five Common Stressors for Seniors

Senior Home Care

While life is always going to provide some type of stress at some times in our lives, no one likes to see someone they love bear the burden of continuing stress. Being under constant stress not only harms mental health, it can lead to various physical health conditions as well. The high levels of stress hormones can wreak havoc with a person’s body, making them feel both emotionally and physically ill.

As a caregiver of a loved one, if you’ve noticed your loved one seems especially worried, stressed, or depressed, you can help out by starting a conversation to see if your loved one can pinpoint if there is a specific worry he is struggling with. Sometimes just naming the concern can be the greatest first step toward addressing it and finding solutions that work for your loved one.

Here are five common emotional challenges that many seniors encounter.

  1. Concern about not being able to care for themselves or their loved ones. Your elderly loved one may worry about herself or her loved ones (including pets) if she feels she cannot give them the care they deserve. Having always been the one to provide care, it might be hard for her to ask for help in this area. A senior home care provider might be a great resource for help in daily care matters to help your loved one feel more independent. A senior home care provider can also help with pet care tasks like walking the dog or cleaning out the litter box.
  2. Feeling bereaved over a lost loved one. Grief is a normal process of losing someone, but occasionally, it becomes overwhelming and makes the bereaved person unable to complete everyday activities like going to her weekly bridge game or making a meal. Professional counseling can help, along with assistance from a senior home care provider to help with chores your loved one has temporarily stepped away from.
  3. Financial burdens. If your loved one is constantly worried about how she’ll pay the bills, it can wreak havoc on her ability to feel joy. There’s often shame built around financial troubles, so encourage your loved one to be honest about her finances and then look for ways your state or community offers assistance.
  4. Loneliness. If your loved one lives alone, she may feel like she has no one to connect with each day and become very lonely. Being alone is not a negative situation, but feeling lonely is. Help her connect to her community through her local senior center, or have a senior home care provider come to her home for companionship and connection.
  5. Chronic health issues. Having consistent pain or feeling not like herself all of the time because of a health issue can make your loved one become depressed and withdrawn. It can be more difficult to enjoy life when health issues seem to always get in the way. Work with your loved one’s physician to find out if there are medications that can help or lifestyle changes that can be made so your loved one will feel better and be able to get out more often.

Mental health is important for your loved one. Finding the source of her emotional challenges is the first step to better days ahead.
