Home care doesn’t have to mean every day follows the same routine. Adding simple, enjoyable activities can make an ordinary afternoon more interesting and create opportunities for conversation, laughter, creativity, and connection.

Activities should always be selected according to the client’s abilities, interests, safety needs, and preferences. Here are ten simple ideas:

  1. Create a “Name That Song” game. Play familiar music from the client’s younger years and see how quickly they recognize the song or artist.
  2. Look through old photographs. Family albums can lead to wonderful conversations about childhood, weddings, vacations, careers, and family traditions.
  3. Have a movie afternoon. Choose a favorite classic movie, comedy, musical, or television program and prepare a comfortable viewing area.
  4. Work on a puzzle together. Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, word searches, and simple card games can make quiet afternoons more enjoyable.
  5. Create a family recipe book. Ask the client about favorite recipes and the stories behind them.
  6. Take a safe walk. When the weather and the client’s condition permit, a short walk can provide a pleasant change of scenery.
  7. Start a small indoor garden. Caring for herbs or easy-to-maintain plants can become an enjoyable routine.
  8. Celebrate unusual holidays. National Ice Cream Day, Friendship Day, Grandparents Day, or even “favorite dessert day” can provide an excuse to do something different.
  9. Make a memory box. Collect photographs, postcards, letters, recipes, and other meaningful items in one place.
  10. Ask a question of the day. Try questions such as, “What was your first job?” “What was your favorite vacation?” or “What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?”

The activity doesn’t have to be complicated. What matters is creating an opportunity for the older adult to participate, make choices, communicate, and enjoy the moment.

At Salim Inc. A Plus Personal Home Care, we believe companionship should include moments of happiness and connection. Sometimes a favorite song, an old photograph, or a good conversation can become the best part of someone’s day.
