On Saturday, September 6, 2025, the Vietnamese Buddhist community in Silver Spring, Maryland, came together to celebrate Lễ Vu Lan — a sacred Buddhist festival also known as Ullambana, honoring mothers and ancestors. This annual observance offered a moment of deep spiritual reflection, filial piety, and community connection.

Rooted in the story of Maudgalyāyana (Mục Kiền Liên) from the Ullambana Sutra, Vu Lan is one of Buddhism’s most touching traditions. It recounts the efforts of a devoted son to free his mother’s spirit from suffering, symbolizing the boundless compassion and gratitude children owe their parents — especially their mothers.

On this meaningful day, the community participated in traditional rituals such as:

  • Offering food, flowers, and symbolic items at the temple altar
  • Chanting and Dharma talks led by monks and spiritual teachers
  • Wearing roses to honor mothers — red for those still living, white for those who have passed
  • Acts of charity and generosity, including the distribution of food and support for those in need

Families gathered at local temples and community centers throughout Silver Spring, creating an atmosphere of reverence, cultural pride, and togetherness.

  • Presented their home care services to members of the Vietnamese and wider community
  • Met with current and potential clients and caregivers, providing guidance on compassionate, personalized home care options
  • Made new connections and friendships, deepening their relationship with the local community

The event provided a meaningful platform for Salim Inc. to share their mission of caring for elders with dignity and respect — values that align closely with the spirit of Vu Lan. Many attendees appreciated the opportunity to learn more about caregiving resources available in the area, especially as they reflected on the importance of caring for aging parents.
